Namaste

One of my students asked me what Namaste actually meant.

It’s a gesture, where you place your palms together at the heart. My yogi had said it means, “may the peace that is in me, share the peace that is in you.” I’m sure there are many definitions!

I checked the yoga journal site. It states that the gesture Namaste is an Indian tradition that represents the belief that there is a divine spark within each one of us that is located in our heart chakra. The gesture is an acknowledgement of the soul in one, by the soul in another.

nama means-‐-‐bow as means-‐-‐I

te means-‐-‐you

It literally means” I bow to you”.

Your hands may also be placed between your eyebrows, at the third eye. Bowing your head, and then bringing your hands to your heart. This is an even deeper form of respect!

I will usually say,”Namaste” at the end of each class. Our minds are relaxed. The room is peaceful. It is done as a symbol of gratitude and respect. Thanking my students, and my own teachers.
